Data Sufficiency Ranking

Data Sufficiency involves questions in logical reasoning which comprises of a few conditions and candidates need to analyse which of the given conditions may help get an answer or solution to the question. These questions are mostly asked to test the logical and analytic skills of the candidate.

Tips for Solving Data Sufficiency Question::

  • Do not look for the final answer (if not asked). You mostly have to only answer which conditions will satisfy your requirements to meet the answer to the questions
  • Make sure - you do not make any assumptions. The information given in the question is the only fact that needs to be considered to answer the question
  • Data Sufficiency in Order and Ranking :In this type of data sufficiency question, data will be provided of persons based on order, position or ranking. The candidate is required to analyze the statement or statements which are required to answer the question.

Directions : In the given problem, a question is followed two statements numbered I and II. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements is sufficient to answer the question, and then give your answer accordingly.

Example : What is Suman's rank from the top in the class of 40 students ?

    I.  Reena is 4 ranks below Suman and is thirty-first from the bottom.

II. Anuj is two ranks above Suman and is thirty-seventh from the bottom.

    Solution:

From I, we conclude that Reena is thirty first from the bottom. That means thirty students are below Reena.  There are 3 students between Reena and Suman.

So, Suman has (1 (Reena) + 3 + 30) = 34 students below her in rank, namely Reena, 30 students below Reena and 3 students between Suman and Reena.

Thus, there are [40 - (34 + 1) ] = 5 students above Suman in rank. So, Suman is 6th from the top.

From II, we conclude that Anuj is 37th from the bottom i.e. 4th from the top. Since Anuj is two ranks above Suman, so Suman is 6th from the top.

Thus, either I alone or II alone is sufficient to answer the given question.
